The September Sale was a very busy sale with high interest
from both private and trade buyers. The ceramic section highlights
included a pair of oval porcelain plaques painted by John Randall who was
a painter for Coalport. Both were studies of birds of prey and with much
interest were contested to £2500. Other highlights were an interesting set
of ten early green glass chemist bottles which fetched £200, an
interesting pair of KPM Berlin porcelain plaques of Negro figures fetched
£540 and a Clarice Cliff dinner set fetched £200. Two very large Chinese
blue & white decorated oviform vases made £400 and £400. The Works of
Art section had a good early red stained and natural ivory chess set
fetching £230, a Victorian walnut marquetry inlaid Swiss musical box
making £1150 and a Tudric pewter two-handled vase designed by Archibald
Knox making £220. Within the Collector’s sale the toys and dolls
included a good quantity of Hornby ‘O’ gauge model trains and accessories
and some good dinky and corgi model cars, all fetching in excess of
£5000. The Militaria, medals and coins included an early Japanese
Mempo, (the metal face guard embossed and pierced with a red lacquer
backing) causing lots of interest worldwide making £1300, various medal
groups fetching in excess of £2000 and a unique early 20th
Century gold medal, the King’s gold medal for best cadet fetching £480.
Clocks and barometers were widely contested with a good mahogany
brass inlaid bracket clock fetching £720, a George III oak longcase clock
by Stoke
Bendley fetching £500 and various other brass cased
carriage clocks and a skeleton clock in all fetching over £5000. The
furniture market has much improved and highlights of the furniture
auction include a Victorian rosewood teapoy making £500, a Regency
rosewood three-division canterbury fetching £480, a Regency mahogany large
wine cooler making £920, an Edwardian rosewood marquetry inlaid semi
bowfronted side cabinet making £1050, a Victorian marble chimney piece
fetching £1750 and a good late Victorian mahogany drawing room suite
fetching £1050.
The Collector’s Sales which are now held four times a year are proving
very popular and appear to be drawing buyers worldwide and attracting a
lot of interest.
