The February sale got off to a flying start with the
Ceramics section containing in excess of 100 lots, to include a
rare Russian porcelain figure which was contested by two telephones up
to £17,000 (lot 24). Other highlights included a pair of Mosanic
models of cats fetching £460 (lot 47), a set of Chelsea porcelain
plates, despite damage, fetched £100 (lot 109), and a very large 19th
Century Imari charger fetched £420 (lot 3). The Works of Art
Section had many interesting highlights, to include a Newlyn Arts
& Crafts rectangular copper wall mirror fetching £1450 (lot 222), an
unusual Liberty’s copper wall mirror, after a design by Archibald
Knox, fetching £2200 (lot 251), another Liberty & Co pewter mug after
a design by Archibald Knox fetched £160 (lot 208), a good Michael
Ayrton patinated bronze group of the three bathers fetched £4000 (lot
269) and a large scale plated model of the Mary Rose fetched £820 (lot
287). The Toys and Dolls had its usual collection of boxed
Dinky’s and Matchbox and included an extensive Britain’s lead painted
farm set fetching £190 (lot 297), another extensive farm set fetching
£270 (lot 316) and a large bisque head doll by Simon & Halbig fetching
£150 (lot 330). The Militaria, Medals and Coins section again
caused much interest with a Good Ship’s Bell for HMS Nonsuch fetching
£2900 (lot 339), an 1847 military general service metal fetching £620
(lot 340), and a scarce English cup hilt rapier fetching £670 (lot
357). The Clocks and Barometers began with a 19th Century
Vienna porcelain and gilt metal mounted table clock fetching £1500
(lot 363), a marine barometer by Negretti & Zambra from HMS Superb
£450 (lot 375), a marine chronometer by Dent fetching £1950 (lot 377)
and a barograph by Short & Mason fetching £380 (lot 381). The
Furniture section was the largest section in the sale with in
excess of 250 lots and included a George III mahogany bow fronted
sideboard fetching £720 (lot 486), a 19th Century mahogany twin
pedestal desk fetching £2300 (lot 499), a George III mahogany bureau
bookcase fetching £700 (lot 520), a late 18th/early 19th Century Dutch
marquetry bombe bureau fetching £3100 (lot 542), a George III mahogany
chest fetching £1650 (lot 528), a very large mahogany Victorian
wind-out extending dining table fetched £6800 (lot 560), a George III
mahogany D-end dining table fetched £900 (lot 602), and a fine
Victorian burr walnut rise and fall Davenport fetched £1850 (lot 546).
