containing approximately one hundred and eighty coloured plates,
printed by Taylor & Francis, Red Lion Court, Fleet Street, published
by the author, 26 Charlotte Street, Bedford Square and dated 1873.
Sold for £16,400.
April 2007 Auction Report
Despite only a four-week gap between sales, the April
sale still contained nearly 700 lots. It started with the ceramics
section with a 19th Century German porcelain large figure group
fetching £400, a 19th Century German porcelain oval box and cover
fetching £270, and once again a good selection of Russian porcelain
collectively fetching in excess of £700. The highlight of both the
Pictures and Books Section and the auction was John Gould’s Birds
of Great Britain Volumes 4 and 5 containing in excess of 180 coloured
plates which fetched £16,400. Other highlights in the pictures and
books section were volumes 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 of the Turner Gallery
fetching £200, Jean Young figures Hanging Washing made £260, the late
18th early 19th Century oil sold for £380, J Mourice Highland
Landscape fetched £480, a collection of six John Hall Thorpe Woodcuts
brought in excess of £500 and William Lionel Wyllie Thames Pool
sold for £580. The highlight of the stamps and postcards
section was an interesting stamp collection mainly Victorian and all
in mint condition fetching £4000. In the works of art section
there was a Japanese carved ivory model of a crab fetching £340 and a
similar bone model of a lobster fetching £260, yet another arts and
crafts copper wall mirror after a design by Archibald Knox fetching
£1000. Clocks and barometers included a George III mahogany
long case clock by G Lowe fetching £1000. The antique furniture
section included a 19th Century mahogany gentleman’s wardrobe fetching
£400, a 19th Century mahogany military small desk which made £620, a
Victorian burr walnut Canterbury whatnot sold for £500, A George II
walnut low boy brought £480 and an early 19th Century mahogany
oval butlers tray with stand fetched £540. Further, a Queen Anne
walnut chest on stand sold for £2500, A George III mahogany serpentine
sideboard fetched £2000, an 18th Century walnut chest on stand brought
£980 and a 19th Century mahogany partners desk made £1000.
