The sale started with the Ceramics
section with proof that the Chinese market is still very buoyant with
a pair of 19th Century Canton two handled vases fetching £420 (lot 21)
and a pair of 19th Century Chinese flared rim square section vases
fetching £980 (lot 52). Early Derby is always popular and a pair of
late 18th/early 19th Century Derby porcelain figures, despite
extensive damage, fetched £340 (lot 47), a Royal Doulton jardinière by
George Tinworth fetched £1300 (lot 83) and a pair of Chinese famille
rose oviform vases fetched £600 (lot 84). The highlight of the
Picture section was an ever popular signed coloured print by John
Piper fetching £660 (lot 117) and an unusual collection of
architectural drawings and prints fetching £1300 (lot 115). The
highlight of the Works of Art section was a 19th Century carved
marble sculpture bust fetching £2100 (lot 234). The Militaria
section was filled with over eighty lots to include a scarce mid-17th
Century English Civil War period broadsword fetching £700 (lot 317), a
World War I Royal Naval group of five medals fetched lot £1300 (339).
The collection from the deceased estate of Jennifer Symonds sold well
and highlights included an interesting Henry VIII period silver spoon
fetching £800 (lot 444) and a Georgian spade guinea, together with two
half guineas from the 18th Century fetching £48 (lot 424). Other coins
within the section included a set of ten Victorian, Edward VII and
George V gold sovereigns within a fitted case fetching £950 (lot 463)
and a cased proof coin set fetching £360 (lot 456). The Furniture
section included a pair of Regency rosewood side cabinets fetching
£1900 (lot 585), a pair of early 19th Century mahogany and parcel gilt
decorated wall mirrors fetching £780 (lot 584), a Regency mahogany
dining table fetching £1200 (lot 603), a good George III mahogany
chest on chest fetched £1300 (lot 610), an early George III mahogany
tea table fetched £1150 (lot 613), a George III oak bacon cupboard
fetched £1600 (lot 619), an early 19th Century two part military
secretaire chest fetched £2500 (lot 658), and a Regency rosewood and
brass inlaid sofa table fetched £4800 (lot 659). Other highlights
included a George III oak dresser base fetching £2000 (lot 702) and a
Regency mahogany dining table fetching £1200 (lot 699).
