March 2007 Auction Report
As usual the Jacobs and Hunt Silver and Jewellery
Specialist Sale was in excess of one thousand lots, split over two
days. The one hundred and twenty lots of Modern Silver
collectively sold well, with the scrap price still very high and
collectors still looking for unusual items. The Antique Silver had its
highlights with a Victorian silver three-piece tea set fetching £360,
an Edwardian silver large table mirror fetching £400, an unusual
George III sharkskin knife box fetching £800, a set of four Victorian
silver table sticks fetching £1350, a William IV silver toast rack
fetching £260, a William IV silver Warwick type cruet set fetching
£400 and a George III Scottish silver three-piece tea set fetching
£400. The Watch Section caused lots of interest with a Rolex
Oyster Perpetual GMT Master Chronometer fetching £1150, a Breitling
Navitimer Gentleman’s Chronograph Wristwatch fetching £900 and a
Jaeger LeCoultre gold cased backwind wristwatch fetching £400. The
Jewellery was well contested, to include an 18ct.gold three-stone
diamond ring fetching £2500, a private collection of gold fob seals
including some very unusual ones and a gold cast seal winder mounted
with two spaniels fetched £260. An unusual gold seal fob in the form
of two cricket bats leaning against stumps fetched £260. An 18ct.gold
and platinum set solitaire diamond ring fetched £1100. A 9ct.gold and
amethyst suite of jewellery fetched £320, an 18ct.gold solitaire
diamond ring, approximately 2.75cts, fetched £3300. Day Two began with
the ceramics and glassware, highlights being a David Leach
Studio Pottery vase fetching £1650, a Royal Dux comport fetching £150
and an early 19th Century English Stilton dish fetching £520.
Highlights of the Works of Art Section were a Victorian walnut
cased musical box fetching £420 and a Edelweiss miniature polyphon
fetching £200. The first Sporting Sale held at Jacobs and Hunt
was a very exciting section with the room filling up with collectors
of football programmes and other sporting memorabilia. Collectively
the section fetched in excess of £10,000. The Furniture Section
reflected the improved and now stable furniture market.. Highlights included a walnut
dome top bureau bookcase, fetching £1700, a set of eight William IV
rosewood dining chairs made £1600, a mahogany six-division Canterbury
fetched £950, a mahogany large four pillar dining table made £2100, a
William IV mahogany linen press fetched £780, a George III oak chest
on stand made £580. For local interest there was a pair of Barnsley
Workshop side chairs which fetched £380. An Orkney high back chair
fetched £440, an 18th Century walnut chest fetched £1100, a George III
oak dresser fetched £800, an Edwardian mahogany double bow fronted marquetry inlaid display cabinet fetched £900. Undoubtedly the
highlight of the day was a George III oak dresser which fetched £5400.
