The new year got off to a buoyant start at
Jacobs & Hunt Auctioneers reflecting a turn in all the markets. The
Ceramics section, being smaller than usual to make way for
Pictures, Postcards and Stamps, included a 19th Century Minton
majolica tower jug fetching £200 (lot 24), a Royal Doulton large model
of a tiger fetching £350 (lot 104) and a 19th Century underglaze blue
and white meat platter fetching £100 (lot 5).
The Pictures and Books section heralded some interesting lots
to include a collection of early coloured engravings after Henry Alken
making £2600 (lot 204), another similar group of nine within frames
fetching £340 (lot 209) and a rare early 19th Century coloured
engraving making £1300 (lot 205). Also within the picture section,
causing much interest, were the two Beryl Cook signed prints fetching
£680 (lot 188) and £560 (189), a good early 19th Century marine wool
work picture making £2300 (lot 219) and one volume Cary’s New Map of
England and Wales fetching £450 (lot 224).
The Stamps and Postcards section heralded some interesting
items, the section made in excess of £8000.
The highlight of the Works of Art section was a large preserved
and mounted tiger’s head together with its associated eye witness
account of the hunt. This made £1800 (lot 384). From the same vendor
came an early preserved and mounted leopard’s head which fetched £300
(lot 382). A pair of 19th Century French bisque and ormolu candelabrum
fetched £330 (lot 400) and a brass unusual fire guard with retractable
arms made £560 (lot 401).
The Clocks and Barometers included a 19th Century French gilded
and porcelain mounted three piece clock garniture making £660 (lot
447) and a Champleve four glass library clock fetching £600 (lot 442).
The Furniture section showed an even greater upsurge in prices
included a George III oak dresser making £2850 (lot 624), an early
18th Century oak side table making (lot 612), two George III yew and
elm Windsor armchairs fetching £420 (lot 610) and £400 (611), a good
set of eight George III mahogany dining chairs making £3000 (lot 644),
a Regency style rosewood table made £880 (lot 655), a mahogany D-end
dining table by William Tillman making £2200 (lot 667), an unusual set
of four mahogany and upholstered side chairs making £560 (lot 680), an
18th Century walnut Worcester veneer chest on stand fetching £4,400, a
George III oak spice cupboard making £920 (lot 731) and an 18th
Century walnut secretaire kneehole desk making £3000 (lot 666).
